Tonka Knocks Off Edina 4-1. Hopkins Ends Skippers Streak 2-1 OT ![]() Jim Kruger Played Stellar This Past Week Against Edina and Hopkins
The Skippers started the week with one of their best overall performances of year, in beating #2 Edina 4-1 last Thursday night at the packed Pagel Center. On Saturday afternoon, Tonka, coming off the high of beating Edina, dropped a tough 2-1 OT decision to crosstown Hopkins.
Before a standing room only crowd, along with a loud and large student section dressed in Tonka white, the Skippers came out and took control in the first period against Edina. From the opening face off, Tonka was the aggressor and never let the Hornets offense get on track. At 11:07 of the first period, Tommy Lundquist put a rebound in the back of the net, for the Skippers first goal. Lundquist was assisted by Thomas Schutt and Sam Coatta. Four minutes later, with an assist from Derek Frawley, Pete Carbonneau made a nice move to get open and slid the puck through the five hole, giving Tonka a 2-0 lead. The Skippers dominating play resulted in a 13-4 shot advantage.
In the second period, Max Gardiner, picking up a loose puck down low and showing extreme patience, scored on a back handed shot. While no assist was given, Derek Frawley did a great job screening the goalie and several Edina defensemen in the crease. With an assist to both Coatta and Gardiner, Troy Hesketh let a one timer fly and scored Tonka's last goal of the period and game, giving the Skippers a 4-0 lead. Jim Kruger was simply outstanding all night, coming out of the net to routinely challenge the first line of Edina. The Hornets put up 23 shots in the 3rd period and 40 shots in total. Kruger turned away 39 of the 40 scoring chances to record his 9th victory and bring his GAA down to 1.92!!.
On Saturday afternoon, Tonka traveled to Hopkins to take on the re surging Royals. The Skippers came out a little flat for much of the first two periods, putting few quality shots on Alex Fons. Meanwhile, Jim Kruger was keeping the Skippers in the game by stopping several close in shots and breakaways. Tonka tied the game late in the third period, on a goal by Derek Frawley, who was assisted by Conner Ryan. While the Skippers dominated play in the 3rd period, and came very close to scoring the winning goal, they could not find the back of the net. Hopkins scored the game winner midway through the OT period.
This week, the Skippers have a home contest against Armstrong, and then travel to Wayzata for a game which will help to decide the upcoming Sectional seedings. |
