Tonka Takes Third at Schwan's Cup ![]() Derek Frawley Scored the Game Winner vs. Hill Murray
The Skippers just completed a very successful Schwans Cup Tournament at the Excel this past week! Tonka finished the Tournament with a 2-1 record, including a win over the #1 ranked, and previously unbeaten, Hill Murray Pioneers on Monday night. Tonka lost a very close game to Edina 4-2 on Tuesday, and rebounded with a convincing win against White Bear Lake, 7-2 on Thursday.
The Minnetonka/Hill Murray game was won by Tonka's defense shutting down the high flying forwards of Hill Murray. Jim Kruger was outstanding in net, allowing only one goal, and it was on a power play. Kruger turned away 22 of 23 Hill Murray shots to get the victory. Tonka held Hill Murray to their lowest number of shots on goal of the year in this game. Max Gardiner got the Skippers on the board in the first period, with an unassisted goal. Hill Murray came back with a power play goal in the second to tie the game at 1-1 going into the third. Derek Frawley picked the perfect game to get his first goal of the season, a game winning goal, at 13:28 of the third period. Troy Hesketh and Thomas Schutt assisted on Frawley's goal and Sam Coatta added an empty net goal for insurance late in the third, and was assisted by Jake Thornberg. The final score was 3-1 and a great win for the Skippers!
Tonka's second game was against #2 Edina and while we lost 4-2, the game was much closer than the score indicated. Shots on goal were 25 apiece for both teams, and each team had only one penalty. The Skippers, as have most teams who have played Edina this year, had difficulty with Edina's first line of Lee/Everson/Gaarder. This line accounted for 3 of the 4 Edina goals. The first period was scoreless, and then Edina put up two quick goals early in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. Andrew Prochno, with assists from Thomas Schutt and Sam Coatta cut the Edina lead to one heading into the third period. Early in the third, Edina scored to go up 3-1, and then Prochno scored his second goal of the game, with a rush up the left side of the rink and beat the goalie high glove side. Prochno's goal was assisted by Erik Baskin and Jake Thornberg. Edina added another goal late in the period to win 4-2.
The Skippers finished their Schwans Cup play with a bang as their offense exploded for 7-2 win against a team which has beaten Centennial and tied Holy Angels this year. Tonka's power play came to life going 3 for 5 for the game. Sam Coatta scored early and often, accounting for 4 of the Skippers goals! Other goals were scored by Derek Frawley, Troy Hesketh and Andrew Prochno. Max Gardiner and Prochno assisted on 4 goals apiece, Frawley had 2 assists and Thomas Schutt had one assist. The Skippers put pressure on White Bear Lake all game, outshooting the Bears, 39-18. Nik Job was rock solid in goal, allowing only one even strength goal, stopping 16 of 18 shots, and picking up his third win of the season.
Tonka has a break in the schedule, not playing until next Thursday vs Eastview at Pagel, and then a rematch, Saturday night against Benilde St. Margaret. |
