Tonka Awaits Start of The Home Opener Vs. Hibbing

Minnetonka completed a successful week of hockey by beating #19A Hibbing on Thursday night at the Pagel Center 4-0, and followed that victory with a hard fought 2-1 win, over a much tougher than expected Park Cottage Grove team on Saturday night.

Tonka opened their home schedule with a solid 4-0 victory over Hibbing. The Skippers scored early and often in the first period taking a commanding 3-0 lead. The 3 Tonka goals were scored in a span of less than 5 minutes, midway through the first period, and Hibbing never recovered. Tommy Lundquist was the first to find the back of the net, with the assists going to Erik Baskin and Max Gardiner. Jake Rossman and Gardiner made a couple of great passes down low and Thomas Schutt, who was all alone next to the crease, got the next goal to make it 2-0 Tonka. Nick Helmer notched his first goal of the season, with help from Baskin and Lundquist, who made some very impressive passes in traffic to feed Helmer. Jake Thornberg finished the Skipper scoring with a beautiful breakaway goal in the third period. Thornberg split two Hibbing defensemen, and beat the Hibbing goalie high blocker side. Tonka's penalty kill teams were a stellar 7-7. Jim Kruger stopped all 16 shots he faced to get the shutout, and his second victory of the season.

The Skippers traveled to Park Cottage Grove on Saturday night, and found a team not intimidated by the Tonka squad. Minnetonka was in for a battle all night as the Park goalie turned away everything the Skippers fired at him. Tonka was able to significantly reduce the time they spent in the penalty box, from the previous game, and this helped to produce a 33-13 shot advantage. Jake Thornberg opened the scoring late in the first period, assisted by Max Gardiner and Thomas Schutt. Sam Coatta got the game winning, unassisted, goal early in the third period and Nik Job did the rest. Job kept Tonka in this close game all night and turned away 12 of 13 Park shots. Park's only goal was a power play goal. Job recorded his first victory of the season and his first varsity win!

This week the #10AA Skippers travel to Duluth, on Thursday night, to take on the #6AA ranked team in the state, the Duluth East Greyhounds. The new Heritage Center will be packed as both teams are undefeated in the young season. It doesn't get any easier later in the week as Tonka returns to Pagel on Saturday night to play #6A Duluth Marshall.
