Alumni Player Profile:
Tom Martin, Class of 1982
What year(s) did you play high school hockey at Minnetonka?
1981 (JV), 1982 (Varsity)
What Minnetonka High School hockey moment is most memorable for you?
Beating eventual State Champ Edina at MIA. 1st time in some 20+ yrs a Tonka team beat Edina in Hockey. Fans mobbed the ice. After that, it became a regular occurrence.
Did you play college or junior hockey after MHS?
Yes - Bethel College '84-87 - 93 college games. Finally got to wear a "C", too.
Where do you currently reside?
Minnetonka - right NEXT to Mckenzie Park. Strangely, this is, and always has been, in the Hopkins school district.
What do you do for a living?
I do retail real estate site selection/brokerage for major national retailers and restauranteurs.
How has playing hockey as a lifelong sport helped you to become a better person?
So many personal skills/qualities are developed and strengthened thru the team sport channel. Dedication, loyalty, perseverance, leadership, facing adversity just to name a few. Hopefully I've gleaned some of these and am applying them.
Who do you think is the Greatest Hockey player to come out of Minnetonka High School?
Hardest Worker - Steve Martinson - he made it to the Show!
Raw Talent - Jim Walsh - As good or better on his skates than anyone with whom I've played.
Best hands - Tim Hanus - no question.
Big Game Guy - (Tie) John LaBatt - could carry a team, even as a Soph.
Justin McHugh - BIG in the crunch, huge tournament!
Dream 6 - Hanus between Martinson and McHugh, Magnuson and Roehl on the point, Callinan in the nets.
