Skippers Clinch School's Sixth Conference Title
With Wins over Armstrong and Wayzata

Captain Sam Coatta carried the Skippers this week with 7 points
vs Armstrong and Wayzata

The Skippers completed the season sweep this week in beating both Armstrong 6-2 on Thursday night at the Pagel Center, and then finishing off Wayzata 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. The young Tonka squad ran their record to a very impressive 17-6 after the Wayzata win, and put themselves in a position to obtain a high seed at the upcoming Sectional meetings later in the month.

An early power play against Armstrong gave Tonka the man advantage and they capitalized on the opportunity. Nick Helmer, with an assist to Justin Holl got Tonka on the board at 3:13 of the period. This was quickly followed by an unassisted goal from Conner Ryan. The Skippers out shot Armstrong 14-5 in the opening period. Tonka kept the offensive pressure on Armstrong throughout much of the second period as well. Sam Coatta, with assists from Tommy Lunquist and Troy Hesketh made it a 3-0 lead, before Armstrong rallied to put a goal on the board. In the 3rd, Coatta, with an assist from Helmer got his second goal of the game....but, he wasn't done just yet. A few minutes later, Sam notched his 3rd hat trick of the year on a power play goal, with some great passing down low from Max Gardiner and Troy Hesketh. Thomas Schutt finished the Tonka scoring and was assisted by Joey Fisher and Andrew Prochno. Tonka out shot Armstrong 47-19 and Nik Job ran his record to a perfect 7-0, by stopping 17 of the 19 shots he faced!

Tonka traveled to Wayzata on Saturday seeking to secure a high seed at the upcoming Sectional Meetings. It was very clear, early in the contest that the big sheet of ice was going to play to the Skippers advantage as the physical Trojans could not keep up with Tonka's speed and finesse game. You cannot hit what you cannot catch and Trojans were a step behind the Skippers all afternoon. At just 25 seconds into the opening period, Tommy Lundquist got Tonka on board with assists from Thomas Schutt and Sam Coatta. Late in 1st period, Schutt scored a power play goal with help from Sam Coatta. In the second period, the Skippers took the wind out of the Trojans sails as they scored 3 more goals. Coatta scored just 29 seconds into the second with the assists going to Schutt and Lundquist. Schutt scored the second goal with a very nice pass across the crease from Lundquist. Max Gardiner left a drop pass to Andrew Prochno who put a laser over the goalie's right shoulder to end the second period scoring. Pete Carbonneau, with the assist going again to Tommy Lundquist notched Tonka's final goal in the 3rd to complete a 6-1 win. Jim Kruger stopped 28 of 29 shots he faced to pick up his 10th win of the season.

Tonka's defensive efforts and outstanding goal tending have only allowed 13 goals in their last 10 games, with 8 of those games coming against ranked teams, while offensively Tonka has been averaging over 4+ goals a game over the same period!!!

The final week of the season will begin at home against Buffalo on Thursday night, and then the Skippers finish up with an always exciting trip to Braemer to take on the Hornets Saturday night.
