Tonka Beats Eastview, Falls To Benilde ![]() Skippers Take Third in Gold Division Schwan's Cup
The Skippers started off their hockey week in strong fashion by beating a good Eastview team 4-0, and ended it with a disappointing loss to Benilde on Saturday night, 4-3. Tonka finally got back on their home ice this past Thursday night, and didn't disappoint their fans as they came out very strong against Eastview. The Skippers dominated the first period, outshooting Eastview 18-5. Tommy Lundquist put Tonka on the board midway through the period, scoring his 4th goal of the season with assists from Justin Holl and Jake Thornberg. The second period was a carbon copy of the first, with Tonka outshooting the Lightning 15-1!!. Max Gardiner made a nice move on the goalie and his unassisted goal made it 2-0 Skippers, as we headed into the third period. Sam Coatta, with assists from Thomas Schutt, and Lundquist made it a 3-0 game. Freshman Erik Baskin, stormed the net, and scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Thornberg to complete the Minnetonka scoring. Jim Kruger stopped all the shots he faced, picking up his 5th win of the season and second shutout! As expected,
Saturday night saw the largest Pagel crowd of the season, as the Red Knights of Benilde came to town to challenge the Skippers on our home ice. Benilde scored first, but was quickly followed by Sam Coatta's power play goal, assisted by Andrew Prochno and Thomas Schutt, tying the game at 1-1. The first period saw numerous penalties, with both teams using their special teams play throughout the opening period. The second period saw much of the same action, as penalties dictated the flow of the game. Benilde scored, but their lead was erased, as Max Gardiner tied the game again, with a power play goal at 6:02. Gardiner's goal was assisted by Troy Hesketh and Prochno. Benilde scored late in the period to take a 3-2 lead. Erik Baskin, scoring his second goal in as many games, tied the game again, with assists going to Nick Helmer and Prochno. Benilde scored the winning goal at 11:52 of the final period. With a penalty free 3rd period, Tonka was able to put pressure on the Benilde goalie, coming very close to tying the game during the final minute of play. Shots were very even throughout the contest, with Benilde getting 29 to Tonka's 27.
While the loss to Benilde was disappointing, the #13 ranked Skippers will need to put this behind them as they have 3 very tough opponents this coming week. We travel to #17 Stillwater Tuesday night; #8 Holy Angels will visit Pagel on Thursday, and #15 Moorhead is in town on Saturday night. |
