Tonka Drops a Tough One To Eden Prairie

Thomas Schutt Had Two Goals Vs. Eden Prairie

The Skippers begin their Holiday Tournament tonight against the #1 in the state, the defending 2A state champion Hill Murray Pioneers. Minnetonka beat Hill Murray 4-1 to win the Gold Division last year in the Schwan's Cup. The puck will drop at 6pm at the Excel Center and it should be a great game! Tonka will play tonight, Tuesday and Wednesday. The Gold Division will feature some of the best teams in the state with Edina, Hill Murray, Holy Angels, Centennial, etc. seeing action.

This past Tuesday, Minnetonka traveled to #6AA Eden Prairie to take on the high flying Eagles. Eden Prairie came into the contest with a record of 6-1, and Tonka was 5-2. The first period had no scoring as both teams played very defensively, with very few good scoring chances. Goalie Jim Kruger stopped all 11 shots he faced.

Early in the second period, the Skippers went on the power play and scored the games first goal. Sophomore Thomas Schutt made a great move, after receiving assists from linemates Max Gardiner and Sam Coatta, and beat the EP goalie on the glove side. Eden Prairie evened the score at 8:48 with an even strength goal of their own. Midway through the period, EP scored on a power play goal to make the score 2-1. Tonka matched the Eagles stride for stride, and shot for shot in the second period firing 9 shots on goal, versus 10 for Eden Prairie. It looked as if the Skippers were only going to be down 2-1 heading into the third period, but, with only 11 seconds left in the period, EP was able to score again.

After an EP goal early in the third period, Thomas Schutt scored his second power play goal, with assists from Andrew Prochno and Max Gardiner, making the final score 4-2. While the outcome was not what the Skippers wanted, they clearly showed they could play with the Eagles for a full three periods. With a few hit crossbars and pipes, a missed tip in or two, and the outcome of this game might have been very different.

As mentioned above, the Skippers play three games over the next three days in the Schwan's Holiday Tournament. Come on over to St. Paul to cheer on the Skippers and see some great hockey!
