Skippers Beat Mound and Drop One to St. Thomas

Nik Job Recorded his 2nd Win of the Season Against Mound

This past week, the Skippers began play at Mound Westonka, for a game at Thaler Arena on Thursday night. Tonka started fast and never looked back, beating the #20A ranked Whitehawks 7-1. It was a breakout night for both Sam Coatta and Pete Carbonneau. Coatta scored in each period to record the hat trick, and Pete Carbonneau scored in the first and second periods, for his first goals of the season. Justin Holl also scored his first goal of the season, and Troy Hesketh added a goal to end the scoring spree. Coatta had an assist, for a four point night, and other assists were added by Andrew Prochno, Thomas Schutt, Max Gardiner (2), Jake Rossman (2), Derek Frawley, Troy Hesketh, and Tommy Lundquist. Tonka kept pressure on the Mound defense all night, outshooting the Whitehawks 18-2 in the first period and 42-14 overall. Mounds lone goal was a power play goal in the third period. Nik Job stopped 13 of 14 shots to run his record to 2-0.

On Saturday night, Tonka was on the road again to take on the highly ranked, #4A St. Thomas Academy Cadets, the Class A defending State Champions from a year ago. For much of the first two periods the Skippers controlled play, outshooting the Cadets 11-7, and 13-5. Thomas Schutt made an ESPN highlight film move in the first period, with assists going to Andrew Prochno and Justin Holl, to give Tonka a 1-0 lead. Tommy Lundquist scored his third goal of the season in the second period, with assists from Sam Coatta and Derek Frawley, and it was 2-1 after the first period.

In the second period, after a St. Thomas goal tied the game, Max Gardiner made an outstanding move on the Cadet goalie, going high stick side to give the Skippers a 3-2 lead after two periods. St. Thomas scored the only goal in the third period, and we were headed to overtime for the second time in three games.

However, this overtime ended differently with St. Thomas scoring the winning goal at 5:07 of the overtime period, giving them a 4-3 OT win. For the game, Tonka outshot St. Thomas 37-26. The game could have begun very differently for the Skippers, had it not been for goalie Jim Kruger coming up with key saves very early in the first period. The Cadets had several point blank shots within the first few minutes, and Kruger turned all of them away.

This week, Minnetonka has only one game, but it will a very big one. Tonight, we travel to Eden Prairie to take on the 6-1, #9AA ranked Eagles. Minnetonka is ranked #12AA, by "Follow the Puck". The Eden Prairie Ice Arena should be packed, as players from both teams know each other very well. Let's show our support by coming over to Eden Prairie and cheering on the boys!!!
