Alumni Player Profile:
Phil Bonthius, Class of 1987

What year(s) did you play high school hockey at Minnetonka?
1985 (JV), 1986 (Varsity) and 1987 (Varsity)

What Minnetonka High School hockey moment is most memorable for you?
Scoring my first goal at MIA. Also, playing 4 sectional playoff games at Met Center.

Did you play college or junior hockey after MHS?
No, just bar leagues and pick-up hockey.

Where do you currently reside?
Excelsior...with my wife Peggy and our three boys Justin, Nick and Ryan.

What do you do for a living?
I am a partner in an electrical rep firm in Minneapolis. We sell electrical material to electrical distribution in Minnesota and surrounding states.

How has playing hockey as a lifelong sport helped you to become a better person?
Playing hockey all of my life has given me the opportunity to develop many close friendships. Not only are you all playing together to try to win and have fun, but you learn to look out for each other. That doesn't stop after high school...these are the guys that will always be a big part of my life.

Who do you think is the Greatest Hockey player to come out of Minnetonka High School?
I idolized many great Minnetonka players growing up. I was a defensemen so I guess I am partial to those guys. Besides the outstanding hustle of Johnny Roehl and great goal tending by his younger brother Dale, who also played in '87, my partner for two years was a guy I always thought of as a great player not just a defensemen...Mikko Tavi.
